The Magic Kite (El papalote mágico)
By José Cruz González
Inspired by the artwork of Rosalia Torres-Weiner
The Magic Kite (El papalote mágico) is an inspirational story of how a family leans on love and hope during a difficult time. Although the family in this story is dealing specifically with deportation, the idea of separation in families is a universal struggle that affects all types of families. Stories such as this remind us of strength found in memories, hope and our own ability to believe.Based on the artwork of Mexican–American artist Rosalia Torres-Weiner, The Magic Kite shares a child’s view of deportation. The show’s protagonist, Tito, builds a magic kite to visit his father, Emilio, who has been deported to Mexico. The Magic Kite is a story about hope that universally impacts all families who have suffered a separation or loss. Ultimately, it’s a look at a political issue through the very apolitical eyes of a boy, who doesn’t quite understand why he and his father are separated.
The Magic Kite (El papalote mágico)was inspired by the artwork of Rosalia Torres-Weiner and was originally commissioned by and produced at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte.
