Supporting our study abroad opportunities

STUDY ABROAD FUNDRAISER EVENT

Saturday, February 23 at 3 p.m.

Hilberry Theatre
Featuring
The Freedom Players and Motor City Cabaret

Two of our student companies will travel abroad this year, sharing their talents with others around the world.

What to expect?

  • The Freedom Players and Motor City Cabaret will perform selections from their respective shows and host a silent auction to raise money towards their study abroad trips to Moscow and Edinburgh.
    • Motor City Cabaret will be performing their show ” We Wanna Rock” at the Moscow Art Theatre.
    • Freedom Players will be performing their show, ” I am” at the Edinburgh Fringe Fest.
  • Both ensembles will also go into more details about their continued outreach in the community.

The Freedom Players

The Freedom Players have been invited to perform their social justice theatre piece, I Am, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the world’s largest international theatre festival. Created by students with faculty members, Billicia Charnelle Hines, Dr. RAS Mikey Courtney, and Karen Prall, this social justice project is a devised theatre and dance performance created within our Black Theatre & Dance concentration, which illuminates and engages audiences in current socio-political challenges, utilizing teaching artists through performance and conversation on race and privilege as a means of bridging communities.

Motor City Cabaret

Motor City Cabaret students have been invited to perform and participate in the Month in Moscow study abroad program. The Month in Moscow program is a unique study abroad opportunity in which theatre performers and designers study under faculty from the renowned Moscow Art Theatre School.

Why are these opportunities important?

Both opportunities elevate the international presence of the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, showcasing our department, the College, and the university while also placing our students, quite literally, onto the international stage.

This event is PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN at the door. All proceeds benefit these two companies’ study abroad expenses.
