Blithe Spirit

NOËL COWARD’S HAUNTINGLY HILARIOUS COMEDY!

Blithe Spirit

September 20 to October 6, 2019
Hilberry Theatre
by Noël Coward

Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, has invited friends to the lavish estate he owns with his second-wife, Ruth, to witness a séance which he hopes will debunk what he believes to be superstitious nonsense. Unwittingly, he’s invited a very real medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct the evening’s ritual and, in doing so, unleashed the spirit of his first wife, Elvira, on the house. Impeccably clever, Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit is ripe with wit and charm leaving audiences rolling in their graves from laughter.

Heathers

WHAT'S YOUR DAMAGE?

Heathers the Musical

October 11 to 27, 2019
Underground at the Hilberry

Artwork designed by AKA NYC © 2012 AKA NYC
The Underground at the Hilberry is accessible by stairs. If you have a mobility concern, please call the box office (313-577-2972) 24 hours in advance so we can assist you.

Heathers the Musical is a dark and delicious story based on the 1988 cult film classic film which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. In the musical, Veronica Sawyer is a brainy teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers — three ultra-rich and ultra-popular girls who rule the school through fear and intimidation. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and suck up to the Supreme Queen of the click… but J.D. has another plan for that bullet.

Brought to you by the award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, “Desperate Housewives”), Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She’s the Man), Heathers The Musical is a hilarious, heartfelt, and — dare we say, homicidal —musical based on one of the most popular teen comedies of all time. With its moving love story, laugh-out-loud comedy, and unflinching look at the joys and anguish of high school, Heathers asks, are you in, or are you out?

Sweat

Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize!

Sweat

November 1 to 17, 2019
Hilberry Theatre
By Lynn Nottage

Filled with warmth humor and tremendous heart, Sweat tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets, and laughs while working together on the factory floor. But when layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching fight to stay afloat.

“Keenly observed and often surprisingly funny—but ultimately heartbreaking—the work traces the roots of a tragedy with both forensic psychological detail and embracing compassion. Ms. Nottage…is writing at the peak of her powers…” — The New York Times

She meets and joins up with Lloyd, who’s changed his name to avoid alimony payments and who now lives with a paraplegic named Pootie (who also pretends to be deaf in order to get double disability). But downtrodden Rachel’s luck changes when she wins $100,000 on a game show and begins a series of picaresque escapades involving numerous psychiatrists and, eventually, an ill-fated reunion with her husband. Soon, she begins to wonder whether the modern world might not be a vast conspiracy designed to systematically undermine her own increasingly shaky sanity.

The Winter's Tale

A romance, a comedy, a fairy tale, two worlds in contrast. These are the elements that have made Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale a delight for audiences for almost 400 years. In Sicilia, King Leontes believes his wife, Hermione, is having an affair with his childhood friend Polixenes. As his unfounded jealousy consumes him, he puts his wife on trial and abandons their newborn child, Perdita, in the wild. But as with all fairy tales, the child survives and, now living in Bohemia, blossoms into a free-spirited young woman. Here she meets and falls in love with a young man who, unbeknown to her, is son to her father’s former friend. In a magical twist that must be seen to be believed, she might just find the homecoming she’d never expected.

Stage Kiss

A SUPERB ROMANTIC COMEDY

Stage Kiss

April 24 to May 10, 2020
Hilberry Theatre
by Sarah Ruhl

Art imitates Life. Life imitates Art. When two actors with a history are thrown together as romantic leads in a forgotten 1930s melodrama, they quickly lose touch with reality as the story onstage follows them offstage. Stage Kiss captures Sarah Ruhl’s singular voice. It is a charming tale about what happens when lovers share a stage kiss—or when actors share a real one.

“A gift and a rarity: a superb new romantic comedy that’s moving, smart and flat-out hilarious… You will have difficulty breathing. Stage Kiss is that funny.” — Jesse Green, New York Magazine
